How deep is the water that made the ice skating rink?

Start of the school day: We put two dishes of water into the freezer. One was deep and one was shallow.
Our Predictions:
  • The deep dish will freeze first because there is more water
  •  The shallow dish will freeze first because it is smaller
  • The shallow dish will freeze by brunch.

Before Brunch: We noticed that the shallow dish water had turned completely into a solid. The deep dish had a frozen surface but there was water underneath. There was also bubbles under there as well. Some of our predictions were right! James also told us that the ice skating rink was frozen in layers. We decided to put a layer of water over the shallow dish to see what would happen.
Wonderings?
  • How does the bubble get in there?
  • How many layers made up the ice skating rink in town?
  • Were they very thick?

End of the day: The shallow dish with its second layer was completely frozen. The deep dish had mostly frozen but it still had some water and an air bubble trapped inside.
Wonderings?
  • What would happen to the air bubble when it was completely frozen?
Digi-nauts- Comment on how your predictions were right or wrong. Using some keywords and things we already know about water, explain what happened with our experiment.
