Positive Relationships

Today we demonstrated how you show positive relationships with and activity that needed team work and encouragement. It was heaps of fun!

Our Assembly

This week we are writing about a moment in time. Most of us are reflecting on the assembly our class hosted last week. Unfortunately we had some technical difficulties that meant we didn't all get to share everything we had planned but here is the keynote showing most of our learning.

Orangatan Awareness Week

Liam from our school organised a whole week of activities to help is learn about how to save the Orangatans. He found out that the Orangatans habitat is being destroyed to make way for Palm Oil trees. To raise awareness we gave had climb a tree day, lost some of our playground for a lunch time to see what it is like for the Orangatan and today we raised money by dressing up in orange or as a wild animal and donated money. We also got a peice of fruit. What a cool week and for such a great cause. Awesome stuff Liam!

Roar....!

This term we are learning about how to create and show positive relationships. So for our poem this week we are learning the song lyrics for Roar, by Katy Perry.
We talked about how the song was not about the jungle but how you can stand up for yourself, be strong and fierce, stand up for what you believe in and have courage like a lion!
Poem of the week...Illustrated by Abby.
Ebony thinks it is a great picture because it shows her standing up for her self in the jungle and in the other picture how she stands up for herself in a soccer game with friends. Welldone Abby!

"Roar"
I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath
Scared to rock the boat and make a mess
So I sat quietly, agreed politely
I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Get ready cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now

[Chorus]
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar

Now I’m floating like a butterfly
Stinging like a bee I earned my stripes
I went from zero, to my own hero

You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now

[Chorus]
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You'll hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar...

Ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar, ro-oar

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You’re gonna hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You'll hear me roar
Oh oh oh oh oh oh
You're gonna hear me roar...

Discovering Capacity

WALT: read and use measurements.

Tasks:
Moon Dough
Lego,
Water,
Ricebubble Cakes
Milo
Oobleck
Blog Links

Rules:
  • Take care of each other
  • Take care of the equipment
  • no more than four at at each  activity
  • use quiet/ inside voices

Here are our reflections...

fatter is bigger than taller (Fletcher)
we were a bit confused about the how much water would fit in the glasses (Nikolai)
the 8 held the most moon dough (Hunter)
the cornflour went solid when we put more in the water (Qwade)
It looks really wet but its actually solid (Hunter)
When we put too much water in the oobleck it went all gooey so we put more cornflour in (Annaliese)
We forgot about the recipe it turned out ok (Fletcher)
My one was a bit cold because I put a bit too much milk in and less hot water (Memphis)
I put  half a cup of hot water in and it turned out really good. Just the right temperature to drink (Atlanta)
I put the right amount in but I didnt do the right hotness for the water and it turned out cold (Ruby)
When we put all the ingredients in the milo it turned out yum but it went really white (Maria)
When we put it in the microwave it was still gard so we had to put it in for longer. We had to do it for three times (Atlanta)
It kind of tasted a bit different than I suspected it tasted more like honey than rice bubbles (Bridget)
We by accident did the wrong thing and put the honey into the ricebubbles instead of the butter so we had to take it out. It looks like it will still work out. (Sophie)
It was hard to stir the honey and butter mixture into the ricebubbles. (Azahra)

Paint Molecules and Water Molecules

In our experiment today we asked...

"What happens to paint when we add water?"

Predictions:
  1. The paint colour will go thinner and lighter
  2. The paint will go runnier.

First we painted a strip with red paint.
Than we added 25mls of water and stirred the paint to paint the next strip. We kept going like this until all the strips were done.
Can you see what happened to the paint?

We found out that some strips were almost the same but mostly that we were right about the paint going thinner and lighter.

Digital Dudes: What happened to the paint for it to go thinner and lighter? What is the science at work here?

Heres a hint...think about the model that Joy showed us with the rice (that were the water molecules) and the blocks (which were the paint molecules).

Fletcher asked the question: What is the right amount of water to create paint that will spread enough and colour the paper?

Good question...I wonder how we could find out?

EVAPORATION!!!

Today we did an experiement showing how evaporation works.

Digital Dudes: Can you explain the science of what happens when paint dries?

You might need to use words like...

  • evaporation
  • molecules or atoms
  • gas
  • liquid
  • water
  • paint
See below for some ideas to help you explain it more...

We learned more about what molecules are. Check out this short movie that helps explain atoms and molecules.

This website shows what happens to the atoms (or molecules) in water  when the temperature is changed. What the temperature on the graph change as the water changes from a solid to a liquid then to a gas.

Being Responsible is being Honest

In our class we have talked about how you can show responsibility. In this story, the main character showed responsibility by owning up to a mistake he had made.

Thanks to Nic, Eva and Luca for sharing this great story with us.

How do you show responsibility if you see something happening that is wrong?

Russell Street in the News

Read this article... Proud Librarian thrilled with the Hub.

Can you find some interesting facts?

In the Parakaraka reading group WALT Ask questions about the text we read. Here is a question we asked ourselves...

Why is Jean so special and special to our library?
  • Because she has been working in our library for 36years.
  • Shes started in the library in 1977. Thats a long time ago.
  • She has been there fore a quarter of her life.
  • Jean knows her way around the library. She is a library expert.
  • It might be a world record that we have a 89 year old librarian working at our school.
  • She looks more like 60.
  • She walks to school everyday. She is energetic.
  • She is smart because she reads lots of books and she know where to find them.
  • She thinks it good to keep children reading.
  • We think that she likes to encourage kids to read.
  • She must like reading

Take it Easy!

"Take It Easy" by Stan Walker

[Verse 1:]
Stronger days, Bitter nights,
Cold hands, Warm heart,
Walking round,
But you're staring at the ground,
Take hold, fall apart.

[Pre-Chorus:]
Little by little,
Someone blows the whistle,
It don't matter in the end,
So just slow it all down, slow it all down.

[Chorus:]
You gotta take it easy, easy,
Live your life,
Take on any kind of weather you and me together,
We'll be fine,
You gotta take it easy, easy
Take your time,
It's just you and me together any kind of weather,
We'll be fine,

[Verse 2:]
Open road, broken down,
Bright lights, dark town,
Stand up then you fall again,
You will find a way in the end.

[Chorus:]
You gotta take it easy, easy,
Live your life,
Take on any kind of weather you and me together,
We'll be fine,
You gotta take it easy, easy,
Take your time,
It's just you and me together any kind of weather,
We'll be fine,

[Pre-Chorus]
Little by little,
Someone blows the whistle,
It don't matter in the end,
So just slow it all down, slow it all down. [x2]

[Instrumental]

[Chorus:]
You gotta take it easy, easy,
Live your life,
Take on any kind of weather you and me together,
We'll be fine,
You gotta take it easy, easy
Take your time,
It's just you and me together any kind of weather,
We'll be fine (x2)

Stone Soup

This term we are learning about the value Kotahitanga (unity and togetherness). We also celebrate Matariki this week. So to tie these two things together the whole school brought along one vegetable each and Room 14 made yummy soup for everyone to eat. Just like the story Stone soup.

Then some of the Digital Dudes illustrated the story for everyone to share.

Symmetry Art

WALT: use shape to create a pattern.

This piece shows symmetry. Can you see the autumn leaves reflection in the water?

Matariki Week

This week we have been celebrating Matariki. We enjoyed some soup made from everyone sharing one vegetable. This afternoon we were treated to a special kapahaka performance and we paid tribute to the students who designed and painted the Pou that are now in the front of the school.

What is matariki? Well some students from the kapahaka made a movie sharing the legend of Matariki.

Digital Dudes: Watch this movie again. Copy and paste questions in a google doc in your reading folder and answer.

  • Who raised Mitai?
  • What could Mitai transform into?
  • What was the terrible plan that Mitai heard the Fairy woman talking about?
  • How did Mitai and the brothers catch the Fairy Women and what did they do with them?
  • What are some things that happen during Matariki?

Marae Trip (Shared Writing)

WALT: write a recount

That means we are writing about an experience that we have had.

Success Criteria:
Write what we enjoyed
Write about how we felt
Add detail about what I did
Write about what it looked like

I felt a little bit nervous as we walked up the path. The girls were doing the karanga and I knew that it was going to be a special day. Before we walked inside we all had to take our shoes off. once we sat down I spent a little bit of time looking at the carvings. They looked like maori warriors frozen still and stuck to the wall. They made me feel a little bit scared. David and the other leader started out with a speech. They spoke a little bit of Maori and a little bit of English. The leader of the tangata whenua spoke about the special people that are connected to the marae that had past away. Thier photos were hanging on the back wall. The part of the powhiri that I was most excited about was the hongi. I wasn't feeling very confident but I wanted to give it a try. The line was moving very slowly and the boys went first. They all did such a great job. Then I was my turn and I did it. It felt so good afterwards and I am so glad I gave it a try.

Monday, April 8, 2013

We were wondering...

We were wondering about the marae.

Do you know the answers to some of our wonderings? We hope to find out some on our trip.

What is a Hariru

A hariru is a part of the protocol at a powhiri. It is when you shake hands or hongi with the tangata whenua (people belonging to the place). To hongi you have to press noses together.

We had a practice with our buddies.

At first we were nervous about trying something new. Then we tried it and it was fun.
